The Project
Research sustainable packaging. Create a fictitious product and design a logo and sustainable packaging for it. Take into consideration how the packaging will appear when sitting on a shelf. Follow FDA guidelines when designing nutrition label.
Research Findings
Bacardi will be introducing a bottle made from Nodax™ PHA in 2023. Nodax™ PHA bottles will replace approximately 80 million petroleum-based plastic bottles currently being sold. They estimate that the new bottles will decrease the amount of petroleum-based plastic by 3,000 tons each year.
Nodax™ PHA was verified as a truly biodegradable alternative to petrochemical plastics by the University of Georgia (UGA) and the UGA New Materials Institute in a 2018 study.*
Current bottles are made from petroleum-based plastics. Many of these are not recyclable. Even when they are, bottles are not often recycled due to contaminants from food and the cost of recycling the material. The plastic chosen for Vida bottles and lids are made from Nodax™ PHA plastic developed by Danimer Scientific. The oil used to make this plastic is derived from seeds, such as palm, canola, and soy. It is fully biodegradable in compost, soil, freshwater, and seawater within 18 months as opposed to 400 years for petroleum-based plastics. It does not leave behind any micro plastics. The beverage carrier will be made from recycled cardboard and printed with soy inks.
